Tapspace Broad Strokes by Rick Dior

You can play snare drum in a lot of different ways (and I don't mean matched vs. traditional), and Rick Dior's Broad Strokes is an excellent way to learn about and practice many different styles: orchestral, rudimental, drum set, world music, and more.

This book contains 31 solos that highlight and discuss the differences between styles of snare drum playing, each containing an intro and exercises to help students understand how to transfer between them easily.

The solos are broken down into four main sections:

  • Section 1: Rudimental Solos: from traditional old-school styles to more modern drum corps style
  • Section 2: Orchestral Solos: addresses specific technical challenges for orchestral playing
  • Section 3: Combination Solos: combines rudimental and concert styles with more advanced musical challenges
  • Section 4: Specialty Solos: specific genres and techniques common to drum set playing

The included CD-ROM contains performances of each solo, alone and with a click track. This spiral-bound book belongs on the shelf of every serious percussionist.
