The Golden Age of Ragtime by Ralph Hicks and Eric Rath is a historic combination of well-known ragtime pieces arranged for solo xylophone, with either piano or marimba band accompaniment. Pedagogically, this work is a must-have for any percussion educator!
The optional piano accompaniment can be played on its own to accompany the xylophone soloist, or it can be added to support a marimba band. That said, the marimba parts are plenty to accompany the xylophone on their own.
With a great variety of moods and styles, but a consistency throughout, this collection is sure to be a ton of fun for students and audience members alike, making it an excellent addition to any percussion music library. They provide a challenge without being overwhelming, and each piece is a little different in terms of demand - anywhere from a middle school ensemble to a college ensemble could reasonably perform these pieces!
