Tesseract by Francisco Perez is a work for solo vibraphone and prerecorded mallet percussion. It blends the live performance on the vibraphone with a cyclical, echo-like backing track that interacts in interesting ways with the written part.
The harmonies of the piece evoke a dream-like quality, weaving in and out of sync with the soloist. The textures and gestures are based on the idea of a four-dimensional hypercube, which is achieved by exploring unique aural dimensions which are unique to the rhythmic capabilities of mallet percussion instruments.
